One of the most persistent myths around Gaia-X is the idea that it’s secretly controlled by hyperscalers (the big non-European cloud providers). This is not true.
Let’s set the record straight.
❌ Fake News: Hyperscalers control Gaia-X governance.
Some assume that because major global tech companies are involved in Gaia-X working groups or contribute to technical discussions, they must influence the overall strategy.
✅ Reality: Gaia-X is governed by European stakeholders.
The Gaia-X Association for Data and Cloud AISBL, based in Brussels, is governed by a Board of Directors composed exclusively of representatives from companies headquartered in the European Economic Area (EEA).
📌 Only EEA-based members can:
- Nominate candidates for the Board of Directors
- Vote on strategic decisions
- Influence governance and direction of the association
Global tech players can participate in working groups, but they do not control the agenda.
What does this mean in practice?
- European digital sovereignty is safeguarded by structural rules.
- Strategy and governance are kept in European hands.
- Openness and inclusiveness are maintained at the technical level, enabling collaboration without compromising sovereignty.
By balancing collaborative input with strict governance safeguards, Gaia-X creates a unique model of trust and independence in the cloud and data space.
