Gaia-X Enters a New Phase: Driving Data Space Adoption and Trustworthy AI in Europe

The Gaia-X AISBL convened its Governmental Advisory Board in Brussels, where European member states unanimously endorsed a shared position marking a major transition—from building foundational elements to scaling real-world adoption of data spaces across Europe.

From Foundations to Real-World Deployment

The first phase, referred to as “Season 1.0”, delivered significant milestones. These include the development of a unified architecture and essential building blocks for secure and trustworthy data sharing. The Gaia-X Trust Framework now enables automated compliance checks and supports interoperability across technical, legal, and organizational dimensions.

Key achievements include:

  • Over 600 cloud and edge services listed in the CISPE catalogue
  • Multiple services already compliant with advanced Gaia-X standards
  • More than 200 use cases, including early real-world implementations within Lighthouse Ecosystems

These developments are further reinforced by ongoing standardisation efforts at both European and international levels.

Season 2.0: Market Uptake, SMEs, and AI

With the launch of “Season 2.0”, Gaia-X is shifting its focus toward accelerating market adoption and delivering tangible economic value. Key priorities include:

  • Establishing economically sustainable data space operations
  • Increasing uptake of existing technologies
  • Enabling trustworthy data for trustworthy AI applications
  • Simplifying participation for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)
  • Enhancing interoperability across data spaces

The goal is to reduce fragmentation and strengthen Europe’s strategic digital and data sovereignty.

New Leadership for a Critical Phase

During the meeting, Robert Heinrich was elected as the new Chair of the Governmental Advisory Board, representing Germany. He takes over leadership at a pivotal moment as Gaia-X moves into its next phase of implementation and growth.

His role will be crucial in guiding the initiative toward a federated, secure, and transparent data infrastructure that fosters innovation across industries.

Positioning Europe as a Global Leader

Gaia-X is paving the way toward a future where trust is automated, sovereignty is actionable, and digital infrastructure is built on shared European values. The transition to this new phase represents a key step in positioning Europe as a global leader in trusted data ecosystems and AI.
